Steam Medieval Fest

First, the big ticket item! Rizz Dungeon: Skeleton Key to My Heart was selected to participate in Steam Medieval Fest!

This is a big deal for us, as Steam festivals are by far the best way to get eyes on your game! To celebrate, we recently patched the Demo, with new stuff such as spike traps, a ton of new moves with new effects, AND a new ROYAL and REGAL Monster Girl!

If you haven’t finished the Rizz Dungeon: Skeleton Key to My Heart Demo yet, OR just want to support us, heavily consider grabbing the update and giving the new version a spin! Rebrand???

Long-time fans of the studio will know that we’ve had the same logo as when we opened our doors about 6 years ago! That’s a LONG TIME, and we think it’s time for a refresh! We can’t share the full new logo just yet, but here’s a little leak just for you! 🫵

Huh? I wonder how a Kazoo ties into this??? Guess you’ll have to wait and see! 😈

Ok but why is this the first devpost in 2026???

Long-time readers know that we aim to do these monthly, and it’s been a few months since we last posted… It’s time to #getreal with y’all. We’ve been INCREDIBLY BUSY these last few months. Between launching the Rizz Dungeon Demo, bringing on popagenda (a bunch of very cool marketing & PR peeps), and a few small secret projects, we’ve been kinda drowning in our work.

We’re narrowly avoiding crunch, but wow! It’s a lot of work making and releasing a game while self-publishing! That being said, I think I can speak for the team when I say it’s been an extremely rewarding experience too! Rizz Dungeon currently has about 47k wishlists (maybe become one of them?) and I couldn’t be more proud of the team for achieving that, and that’s BEFORE our Steam Next Fest! Thank you all for your support, it means the absolute world to us! 💚

2025 has come and gone, and we can’t believe it! It’s been a year of crazy ups and downs no matter who you are, but it has, indeed, been very exciting here at Snoozy Kazoo.

We announced two games; Turnip Boy Steals the Mail AND Rizz Dungeon: Skeleton Key to My Heart, continued work on a third- Hobnobbers- and have moved forward with a plethora of projects.

Our community has grown with our Newsletter and socials, we’ve received international attention for our games, and all in all; it’s been exciting! And we just want to say-

That’s, you guessed it, Slime Girl from our upcoming game, Rizz Dungeon: Skeleton Key to My Heart! We ran a poll and the results are in: Slime Girl is the democratically voted BEST Monster Girl to show off to your family!

The votes were incredibly close, and after tallying up both our Twitter poll and Google form she only won by a SINGULAR vote! But we’re happy to have you here, Slime Girl 😊

To those unfamiliar, Rizz Dungeon is a game where you flirt with Monster Girls to recruit them to your team. We announced it last week to great success, apparently- to those unfamiliar with gamedev metrics for a tiny indie team, 10k wishlists is. A Big Number! Especially For A Short Amount Of Time! Eep!

So yeah, we’re thankful for that. We feel that Rizz Dungeon: Skeleton Key to My Heart is a fun new step in Snoozy’s initiative to make silly games that actually end up making you surprisingly emotional, and seeing the positive reception for it makes us ecstatic!

As extra thanks, we’re doing another little rapid-fire questionaire on the game:

What’s it about?

Rizz Monster Girls because you’re weak and have them fight for you because your evil Dragon Demon Lord ex-girlfriend stole your stuff. Eep!

How many Monster Girls?

At the moment, just over a dozen. But we hope to add more if production timelines allow for it, and if the game performs well, of course we’ll add more after launch! We have no shortage of ideas, just time.

Can we get some previews into their personalities?

Sure! Let’s dive into a few we’ve already shown teasers of on social media.

We’ve got the Pixie, who will be fluttering around in the Mystic Forest. Equipped with more eyes, arms, and wings than average, many Pixies tend to be as close to an influencer as you can get in the Dungeon. As pretty as they are, don’t probe too much about their wings- that’s like asking about someone’s toenails, sweetheart.

For less socially-adept internet users, we’ve got the Skeletons. They try their best, they really do, but it’s hard when you’re dead and have based your entire personality on a dead internet subculture. At least they’re having fun. To be cringe is to be free and all that!

Okay enough being thankful. No more information for you

We’re thrilled to finally unveil Rizz Dungeon: Skeleton Key to My Heart; a monster-girl romance dungeon crawler where your weapon is flirting and your party does the fighting for you. We’re focused on emulating that wonderful, maximalist old-school aesthetic with a modern twist!

Is this an H game?

What’s the gameplay loop?

Go into the dungeon, enter a fight with a monster girl, choose to either kill her (unkind) or try to rizz her and make her kill for you (awesome). Continue deeper and deeper into the dungeon until you meet the final boss!

How long is the game?

Short! Maybe 2-3 hours.

How many monster girls can we rizz?

A healthy amount.

How long have you been working on it?

Since June-very short production timeline!

When’s it coming out?

Early next year-we do have an exact date in mind, though we’ll keep it under wraps until we are 100% sure we’ll hit that deadline.

Oops… we forgot July… please forgive us… we were having a very busy month… IN SWEDEN?!!!!

But real quick: hey! If this is your first time seeing us, we’re Snoozy Kazoo, a game dev studio of some guys who make dumb, silly, and fun games! We made the Turnip Boy games– the latest of which we announced last month!– and we’re currently in the midst of making Hobnobbers and Turnip Boy Steals the Mail! (And maybe something else… teehee…)

What’s That About Sweden???

THAT’S RIGHT! Half of the team flew over the big ol’ blue ocean to visit Spelkollektivet, a gamedev co-living space, for a month! It was an EXTREMELY cool experience that we highly recommend to any gamedevs who can afford it.

And wow. It was amazing. As always, we’ve got a lot of cool things going on in the background that we can’t talk about… so we’re going to talk about our cool trip instead! Yippee!!

What’s a Spelkollektivet Anyway?

Before we begin anything, we want to clear that we are not sponsored by the house in any way — we just really enjoyed our time there!

And “there” is building in a tiny village of 1k~ people or so in Sweden. You and about 60~ other people live, eat, and make games together under one roof. It’s inspiring, chaotic, and very productive. For a low cost of living, food, room and board, and a whole desk for you to work at is provided. It’s quiet, surrounded by nature, and just altogether a lovely location- if a little remote! But that tiny bit of solitude is what makes the whole thing almost magical.

We got to meet devs from all around the world, share tips and tricks, swap prototypes, and get a fresh burst of energy for our own projects.

We spent just under a month there, meeting developers from all around the world. For some of us, it was our first time being out of the country, so meeting developers from all walks of life was an extremely enlightening experience. It is hard to describe the wonderful sort of whiplash that goes from working as remote coworkers, rarely seeing other developers in person, to living in a house of 60+ people who are all here for the same reason that you are.

One of the highlights of Spelkollektivet was the weekly showcase nights, where we gathered in the main room. Anyone who wanted to could give a 5-minute presentation about what they had been working on the past week (or 2 weeks, or however long it had been since they had last given a presentation) and show off their cool stuff! The sheer diversity of games, talent, and just hard work on display was incredibly inspiring. You can actually watch their weekly showcases over on the Spelkollektivet twitch channel!

Outside of working, we of course explored Sweden’s beautiful sights and sounds… and tastes! Did you know that the Swedish McDonalds’ still has their Grimace Shakes? Crazy. And they taste better there than they do in the US.

Spelkollektivet actually has some open rooms for the next little while for any game developers interested! Again, we are not sponsored by the house in any way — we just loved our time there and really want the place to thrive!

And What Projects Are Those?

If you’ve been snooping on social media, you’ve probably seen some screenshots and clips of our latest game that we’ve been soft-launching… We’ll have an ‘official’ announcement at some point, but let’s just say if you like rizzing up monster girls. Well. Ehe. Teehee.

Aaaaand that’s all we’ll share for now… wiggles our little fingers! This is part of our initiative in Snoozy to make smaller games with shorter production cycles, so if you’ve been thinking, ‘wow, Snoozy is teasing a lot of games recently’- that’s why!

Back to Business

Now that we’re back stateside, we’re settling in, unpacking, and putting those ideas to work. There’s new announcements coming up soon that we’re excited to talk about, and trust us — the wait will be worth it!

Time to answer some questions from the community!

Snek asks: "If tb kills veggies when they hear him speak, could they listen to a recording of him?"

Yukon: That is safe! This is actually something I have thought in detail about haha. I don't think they have found a tape recorder yet tho.

Anonymous asks: "I wanted to ask, what advice would you give to any aspiring indie game developers about getting started and building up a bit of a fanbase?"

Kiki: This will feel like a cop-out answer, but it really depends on you, your game, your resources... etc. Marketing is SUPER important, but if you're just one or two people with 0 budget, I wouldn't let it take up more time than the development of your game. If, as you say, you're just starting out: Just Start Posting Stuff. Work on your game, pick 3-4 social media sites to concentrate (bsky, tiktok, youtube shorts, tumblr, instagram, and- despite everything twitter is still kicking) and make it a goal to post a little screenshot, or gif, or video once a week on all of those sites. It can be the same thing on all websites! Use a handful (2-3) hashtags, but don't overwhelm it. Maybe you have it on your personal social account, maybe you have an account dedicated for your game- it depends on a number of factors, like if you think the followers on your personal socials will overlap. Basically, when you're starting out, your goal is to get people to know your game EXISTS. When you start out, no one will know or care, because you've not told them anything! Consistently showcasing gifs and progress (while not overwhelming yourself with over-frequency) is the best way to get started. Hope this helped!

Moonblade asks: "Where did the idea for the name Snoozy Kazoo come from?"

Yukon: When we were coming up names for the studio, we were seeking a two word name that was cozy in nature! We ended up getting lists of cozy adjectives and nouns and just smashed them together until something stuck. That being said, we were reaching our limit right before Snoozy Kazoo was thought up, and it actually was one of our last choices, seconded by Toothpaste Mailbox LOL.

What’s Snoozy been up to?

In contrast to last month’s massiveeee announcement pool, this month we’ve got less going on publicly! We finished up our Turnip Boy Doughboi Makeship Plush to a smashing success, getting it nearly 200% funded! He’ll be shipping out to people’s homes come late August, so we hope you’ve got your homes ready for him!

As per usual, we’ve been hard at work on Hobnobbers and Turnip Boy Steals the Mail, both of which you should WISHLIST ON STEAM RIGHT NOW!! HERE IS HOBNOBBERS LINK! HERE IS STEALS THE MAIL LINK!!! Please… pleek… pleek…

But that’s more or less all we can say to the public for now! Instead, let’s get to our usual devposting…

What’s this new little program we’re using?

For the vast majority of its existence, Snoozy Kazoo has been using Photoshop. But as new people with different art program familiarities have made their way onto the team and we’ve had to adjust our pipelines to compensate for this-efficiency and ease of use is important in game development, after all! And through this process, we realized… Clip Studio Paint is pretty nice, ain’t it?

Of course, we’re not tossing Photoshop to the side-there are things you can do in it that you can’t do in Clip, and vice versa! Transitioning to involving Clip Studio Paint more heavily in our workflow has allowed for things like ease of 2D animation and the like!

This applies mostly to our development on Turnip Boy Steals the Mail, given that it is a game that requires a great deal of 2D artwork.

It’s simple, but let’s go through our process!

First, we sketch out the ideas!

Our art director, Jen, created a lovely little set of cubes! These cubes are carefully shaped to account for jump height in game, and be easy to generate levels with!

These cubes can then be re-arranged to varying heights to test out obstacle difficulty…

But of course, they’re not going to be in the actual game itself. Turnip Boy’s world holds a lot more angles and curves than is appropriate for these guys! These cubes are simply used as a guideline for our next step… sketching out obstacles!

See how all these objects are laid out neatly on a grid?

After Jen sketches stuff out, it goes to lil’ ol’ me, Kiki, to do the lineart as well as coloring!

Where’s the coloring bit? Ah well… you’ll have to wait for the full game for that :]

Obstacles aren’t the only trouble you’ll be facing in the game, of course- there are plenty of little skittering fellows about that want to cause trouble for our perfect little boy. It’s only through Clip’s animation system that we’re able to follow a similar process to our obstacle cycle- though with admittedly far more frames!

Haha okay yeah erhm ehe. Well. This month we ended up going to GODOTCON!!!!

“But Snoozy Kazoo,” you might be asking yourself. “What even is GodotCon? What is a ‘Godot’?”

Godotcon???

‘Godot’ is the latest game engine that we’ve decided to try our hand at! And thus far, honestly… we’re really loving it. As some of you might know, we’ve switched game engines for every single one of our games. From Unity to GameMaker to Unreal, we’ve struggled to find something that clicks for us. But it turns out Godot might be… th-the one?!

In fact, we like the engine so much that we’ve started developing an open-source tool called Blankit to facilitate not just our own Godot projects, but to help others with their own! More on that some other time, though.

After we decided to start developing Turnip Boy Steals the Mail in Godot, we came across Godotcon Boston, who announced that they were looking for games to showcase at their event. Excited at the opportunity to show off our game and meet other fans of the engine, we submitted and got accepted! Extremely exciting!

The Event!!

The lead up to the event itself was a blur. It was a two-day showcase where we talked to a wonderful slew of game developers, both new and old. We received tons of priceless feedback and made connections that will surely last a lifetime! A huge thank you to everyone who played our game and offered tips. We’ve been hard at work these past two weeks going over and implementing suggestions!

And of course, we had to do our time-honored tradition of eating cold Chef Boyardee, started by our former marketing expert Jordan Kegler back at PAX East 2020.

All in all, GodotCon was an amazing experience. The organizers were super kind and accommodating, the community was lovely, and the general energy for the engine was infectious. We’re looking forward to making games with this engine in the future!

Needless to say, Turnip Boy Steals the Mail is a spin-off of the main series, but that doesn’t mean it’s not canon! Cool Makeship Link 👀

Buuuut since we can’t talk about our projects, let’s talk about the next best thing: Project Management! This past month, Snoozy switched from our old task-tracking system to a new system called Codecks. Imagine if you could track your project progress with a deck-building roguelike, and that’s what Codecks is! It’s a nifty little tool specifically made for Indie Game Developers, which we just happen to be.

And to clear the air: no, we are not sponsored in any way by Codecks. Though if Codecks is reading this — we’d totally love to be!

We wanted to share how this system has been working for us, so any aspiring indie devs out there can see if this system is appealing to them and potentially benefit from it!

How it works

What’s made Codecks click for us is how it blends structure with playfulness. It doesn’t just let you organize your work — it encourages you to think about it in terms of clear progress paths, visual layouts, and deck-building metaphors.

We kept falling off of our past task systems because jugging a game’s worth of art, code, design, writing, marketing, and bug-fixing while ALSO needing to come up with constantly updating organization methods is. Hard. Codecks simplifies that process!

Codecks organizes itself into Cards, Decks, and Projects. Cards are tasks (like “Animate a Hob’s death!”), Decks are chunks (animating a Hob would go in our ‘Art’ Deck, but you could split it up further into a ‘3D Animation’ deck while also having a ‘3D Modeling’ Deck), and Projects are, well, projects! (‘Hobnobbers’ is, well, our project!)

What we like

Myyy personal favorite bit of Codecks is how it handles Conversations. Conversations can be had on any card, which makes it really easy to find discussions and notes on particular topics. In the past, we’ve used Discord to talk about ideas, critiques, and problems as they’ve come up. When notes are discussed quickly, they don’t necessarily qualify for opening up the whole task itself, which has made remembering clarifications like “Wait, what resolution did this sprite need to be, again?” as simple as pulling up its relevant card.

Other people on the team love the ‘Required Effort’ settings, which allow you to set an amount of effort for each card and then see how much total effort a single person has. Basically, all of us adore the fact that you can use Markdown (which I, Yukon, am currently converting this post into for the Snoozy website haha). There are just a ton of little quality of life features that really feel like this tool was made by indie devs, for indie devs, and it’s really smooth to use!

But I’m just a little guy. Just a Small Man. With Few Dollars?

Codecks is free for up to 5 users on a team! If you’re a solo developer working on a project in your spare time, it’s probably more than suitable for you.

What are you most excited for in Hobnobbers?

I’m most excited for the physics. Some of my favorite games have really robust physics simulations like Gang Beasts, Motor Town, and BeamNG.drive. I love sandbox games that have fun and unexpected environments to explore in a tactile way.

What’s something you’ve worked on in Hobnobbers recently that you’ve found particularly frustrating?

Audio Volumes and spatialization. In a 3D game, each space needs to sound different, and sometimes dialing that in just right can be a pain. Large open rooms and tiny little tunnels sound different in real life, and they will do the same in Hobnobbers, after lots of tweaking and iteration. Coming from 2D development, this literally opens up a whole new dimension of sound design.

What kinds of feelings do you hope for the Hobnobbers’ music to bring about?

I really want to mix dreamlike folktale and plastic consumerism. I am super inspired by I spy books, grimms fairytales, folk/americana music, and toy instruments for the Hobnobbers musical palette, and the music comes very naturally when the inspirations are so vivid. A lot of Hobnobbers is about simulating something tactile and physical in a digital space, and I hope to channel that into the music.

What’s Snoozy been up to?

A lot we can’t talk about, actually, but a lot of behind the scenes work as we’ve been nailing down various elements on Hobnobbers! Part of this work has manifested itself in, of course, Hobnobbers art style!

As with any game- or visual project, really- it’s important to spend time on concepting ideas and styles, so that the project has a strong foundation. Hobnobbers is no exception, and our lovely Creative Director, Jen, has come up with a workflow to ensure this works out!

We’ll be introducing a new character to convey this idea: the Gacha Goose! The host of one of our in-game shops, the Goose is an intimidating bird that controls a puppet girl.

(Note: Despite the name ‘Gacha Goose’, there will be no microtransactions in Hobnobbers! Fret not!)

The Process

Concepting is broken down into 6 phases:

1. Outlining the goal
2. Research
3. Sketch
4. Feedback
5. Refinement
6. Finishing

Outlining the goal is a process of figuring out what we want the design to be. In terms of utility: is this character an early-stage boss that is meant to introduce the character to the whimsy of a game’s world? Are they a shop-keeper? An intimidating mob enemy that can kill you in one hit? In addition, what sort of feelings do we want this character to invoke? For the Gacha Goose, we wanted the player to despise the Goose and feel pity for the girl. What specific vibes would help convey these emotions?

Taking the time to write down your goals before starting to draw can set a strong foundation that snowballs into the rest of these stages! Conveying as much information as possible with visuals alone is particularly important for games, where players don’t have the time to read a novel before playing.

Research is self-explanatory, yet sometimes the longest stage in the process: we collect reference materials that achieve the goals we mentioned in our first section, and see what we can learn from them!

For the Gacha Goose, medieval and doll-like pieces of clothing served as big inspiration. We ended up looking at a lot of clown-adjacent pieces, porcelain-esque prosthetics, and watercolor illustrations to get closer to our final idea.

Sketch is when all the ideas that have been worked on reach fruition for the first time. It can be messy, but just slamming together a variety of different vibes and looks to see what invokes the right feeling. Many different concepts should be made here, in order to keep in mind the next round…

Feedback! It’s time to show the concepts to an audience. We do several different types of feedback: an internal one with just the team, a semi-internal one with friends and family of the team, and one with Camp Kazoo over in our Discord.

Not only do we ask for what people like best, but also what they feel about the design. Sometimes context is given for the character’s role in the world, sometimes it isn’t; finding out what that ‘first gut feeling’ is important.

Refinement is the actual application of the feedback that’s been received. It is a process of reflection, reassessing our goals, and figuring out how to marry what people think with what the purpose of our design is.

It should be noted that one stage of refinement isn’t the end of the process- going back to Feedback after finishing up another iteration and getting even more notes on what people think is just as important! Just be mindful of reaching a done state at some point. You’ve got a whole game to make, after all, and iterating constantly on the same idea will make for a game that never gets shipped.

What are you most excited for in Hobnobbers?

I’ve been really enjoying our concepting phase! It’s always fun to create new characters/environments and figure out what makes them tick. We’ve also been playing around with some UI design, which is personally one of my favorite things to work on. I’m excited to continue to see these things make it into the game! There’s always a point in development when all the pieces kind of click together, and you can see the fruits of everyone’s disciplines start to create something truly unique!

What’s something you’ve worked on in Hobnobbers recently that you’ve found particularly frustrating?

I feel most in my element when I’m working on 2D assets. Whenever I touch anything 3D, there’s some growing pains that come along with it. All in all, I get really passionate about learning new things, so it’s been pretty fun. When I start concepting characters or mocking up UI screens I feel like I can take a breath of relief though. I’m hoping some day 3D feels as natural as 2D to me!

What’s a source of personal inspiration for you as you design characters for Hobnobbers?

When it comes to the world of Hobnobbers, I’ve been really inspired by Studio Ghibli films! I love the soft world building in films like Spirited Away or Princess Mononoke, and how they handle spirits and folklore within these films. I’m hopping that we can create some interesting characters that players can really speculate about, but not necessarily get all the answers easily. I kind of want the players to create the answers themselves.

When it comes to the stores and what we call “whimsical consumerism”, I’ve been inspired by games like “Bombrush Cyberfunk” and, funnily enough, a game called “Breaking da Rules”, an old Fairly Odd Parents game made by THQ. Bombrush I just love those Y2K vibes, and it was a big inspiration for creating the runner. Breaking da Rules has a great way of creating these very whimsical and silly spaces. They also have this great ability to mesh 2D and 3D elements, which gives us some inspiration as well!

Lastly, I’ve been really inspired by old fantasy books. I love absorbing and learning from materials that inspire me, and recently I’ve received this book called “Arthur Spiderwick’s Field Guide to the Fantastical World Around You!” (A long title I know.) I can always go on Pinterest, but having physical resources from fantasy artists that I feel like to me are “the greats” gives me a lot of inspiration.

What are you most excited for in Hobnobbers?

I’m very excited for a lot of different technical aspects and seeing people’s reaction to the game! I want to see all of the systems come together to create a perfect storm of chaos. The randomly generated map ontop the hexes system, with events like Money Storms, Floods, and Fairy Circles of Doom, is going to make each run completely unique and you’ll never know what kind of madness you’re getting into! On launch day I intend to be hopping into games with people (and fixing any bugs that crop up).

What’s something you’ve worked on in Hobnobbers recently that you’ve found particularly frustrating?

The level generation for the mall has been a particular nightmare, but in a very fun way. The mall is generated from bottom-to-top and each floor tells the floor above it about the different combinations of rooms that it can generate. This allows us to have those iconic vertical levels that overlap each other with walkways above the floors below! This has required a lot of tuning in both making the parts that generate, and how to place them to get results that are always interesting (without bugs). Not only do we have to generate each floor, we also have to generate each store! Accounting for the size and placement of these is a constant challenge when making segments but I made a blender template that speeds it up quite a lot.

What pitch did you end up bringing to the pitch competition?

My pitch was a game about a vampire who was ousted from their castle by another vampire, and is trying to take it back. You would have to sneak back in through various pathways that challenge you in different ways, some would require parkour skills, others would require puzzle solving. And while you’re doing all of this, the AI learns and adapts to your behavior setting traps or blocking off paths in a constant game of cat and mouse. I am still extremely passionate about this idea, and fully intend to pursue it one day!

What was your favorite part of development?

When I was brought on I was tasked with some spritework for the Cryptic Crypt. I love the whole ‘creepy theming’ so I had a lot of fun making assets for that area. But more than anything I just love working together with everyone and seeing the project evolve as a whole.

What was the most challenging part of development?

The final boss was easily the most difficult thing I worked on. We had all these little pieces that needed to animate smoothly and look cohesive, so it got pretty tricky at times. Thankfully, Carson was there to help me and we powered through. It was a very complex design and he did a fantastic job on the coding end.

Describe what you do on the team!

I’m the studio’s lead pixel artist! In other words, I’m that guy who mashes a bunch of blocks together, arranges them into a Turnip Boy looking thing, animates it a little, passes it off to Carson, and calls it a day.

What was your favorite part of development?

Watching it all come together tbh. I’ve loved making pretty much every asset for the game, even the ones I was dreading going into them, but seeing all that hard work in game and being brought to life is just incredible… Also PAX East. PAX was some of the most fun I’ve had in my life tbh.

What was the most challenging part of development?

Making Turnip Boy himself actually… or more accurately, Turnip Boy’s portrait. He’s gone through a couple redesigns based on Jen’s rendition of the character in promo art, and there was a TON of back-and-forth to make him look as close to perfect as possible. It was pretty dang tedious, but the final result was more than worth it!

What’s your favorite food?

Bit of an odd one, but Gnocchi Genovese! It’s basically lil’ balls of potato mixed with pesto, grilled chicken, garlic, and parmesan cheese, and it’s heckin’ incredible lol.

What’s your favorite game?

I bet you’d be expecting me to say Rivals of Aether, but it’s actually Cuphead! Everything about that game is just so me-pilled it’s insane.

What bop are you listening to right now?

Listening to a lot of the Jet Set Radio OST recently! Hideki Naganuma doesn’t miss lmao.

Do you have any pets?

I have two cute puppers named Hunter and Chewie! They’re really good boys :D

What was your favorite part of development?

Genuinely, all of it. I was constantly pushing myself to make cool new systems, UI, enemies, boss fights… I did a lot of things for the game that I’m super proud of (and obviously couldn’t do without the help of everyone else along the way)

What was the most challenging part of development?

Again, all of it. It’s super easy to want to add a bunch of over-the-top, grandiose shit to the game but it’s never that easy. It was a challenge to find that balance but definitely a fun one that I think we reached perfectly.

My favorite part of development was getting to plan out the new music system and pull from lots of different genres to give the OST as much variety as I could, while still keeping that Turnip Boy DNA in each track.

It was a real fun challenge to make each weapon feel as unique and impactful as possible using sound

What was your favorite part of development?

Collaborating with the team and creating a story that was as wild as the first game was a ton of fun! Some of my favorite parts of game development are working with highly skilled individuals who are passionate about what they do. I love seeing what we can come up with!

What was the most challenging part of development?

Hmmm… I think scope is always the hardest part for me! Trying to get everything we want in the game while keeping in mind time constraints and resources is always a tough balance to strike. It took a bit for us to really nail down Turnip Boy Robs a Bank.

My favorite character is probably Old Man Lemon! I don’t know why exactly… I think the fact that in the first game he was an inconspicuous old man and then later a hitman was always funny and silly to me. I also just love his design. It’s a good depiction of how I feel on a daily basis. My knees hurt when I get up now, growing up is WEIRD.

Sup gamers? Today we’re releasing a new section of the Snoozy Kazoo website, as well as giving y’all the low-down on our latest bug fixes!

First off, we’ve introduced a brand new page, the changelogs page!!! This page is the new home to ALL of our changelogs, no matter how big or small! Here, you can check out what we’re doing in more detail!

Secondly, we know y’all are craving a ton of bug fixes and improvements, and we’re attempting to deliver! We’ve released our first major patch v1.0.1! This update is live on Steam, but other platforms will slowly be recieving it as we submit it to various review processes!

v1.0.1 fixes and optimizes several game breaking bugs and slowdowns, as well as HEAVILY improving the last section of the game by adding checkpoints! Part of the new changelogs system we implemented allows us to attach changelogs to posts, so check them out below if you’re interested!

We hope this update, as well as a bunch of the tiny ones we’ve been pushing helps resolve some common issues, and we hope your turnip experience is fun as heck!

• Added checkpoints to the final sequence of the game (Placing a Jet Booster will save to your save file, meaning you don't need to do them all in one run).
• The XP bar at Twin #1's Research Table now shows how much XP you will gain when hovering over a weapon that is worth XP.
• You can now skip the intro cutscene when you delete your save.
• You can skip the end credits if you've seen them before by holding Space on Keyboard or A on controller.

• Made the Tasks app much more optimized.
• Credits Music now plays even if you have music disabled in the settings (but at a low volume).
• Robo-Rafael will no longer tell you to upgrade your bag during a run if you cannot do so yet.
• Migrated progress and settings files to the proper platform-specific folders so they can be platform-independent.

• Fixed issues with scrolling in the Tasks app.
• The Frog Gun and Fly Trap bullets no longer home in on enemies that cannot take damage.
• Can no longer sequence break by leaving a room while a Bone Bridge is being built.
• Can no longer leave a room before Annie tells you to place a Jet Booster during the final sequence.
• Fixed an issue where you could deal so much damage to a boss when initiating the fight that it would sequence break.

Turnip Boy Robs a Bank will be launching January, 18th… 2024!

While we’re excited that the launch of the game is finally set in stone, we know that we had anticipated a 2023 launch date and had said so in our announcement trailer. We wanted to apologize to everyone, because we know it’s a bit of a bummer to have to wait until the new year. We were hoping for a late November/early December launch and the team worked hard to finish the game for those dates.

Our biggest hang up right now is porting, testing, and localizing. We want to make sure that the game we give y’all is as clean and as accessible as we can make it before it launches. With the bugs we’ve been working on, we wouldn’t have felt right launching the game in the state it was in.

To ensure that the game can launch on all the platforms we wanted with the quality we want, the game has been delayed to January 18th.

We have partnered with the wonderful folks at Pixile Studios for a chaotic two-week crossover event! In Super Animal Royale, you can complete 6 challenges to earn Turnip Boy-themed items. Ever wanted to tear up wanted posters in a battle royale? This is your chance! Additionally, you will now be able to unlock a Super Apple Cat. Crancran would be proud! uwu

Uh… we don’t know what to say about Turnip Boy’s vandalism in the Welcome Center fountain… he’s just a chaotic little guy! He’s just expressing himself, okay? It’s a phase. Everything is fine… especially when you get to listen to a new Veggieville remix composed by Jake Butineau (another Jake!) over at Pixile Studios while you take in the carnage! How can anything be wrong when you’re listening to such a bop?

We can’t reveal too much, but we’ve definitely seen a few super animals in our game since the wormhole opened… when Turnip Boy Robs a Bank is released, you all will have to keep an eye out!

Holy crap! The Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion PS4 physical is now out in stores WORLDWIDE!

I’m still not over the Nintendo Switch physical existing, but now we have TWO PHYSICALS!!!

This is a massive W for PlayStation gamers, so go to your local video game store and try to yoink a copy!

Holy shit, we just showcased Turnip Boy Robs a Bank at PAX East 2023! And the build didn’t break! Woah!!!

We wanted to write up a post to highlight all the cool stuff that happened, and to give some insight as to what it’s like to showcase at a convention as big as PAX! We’ve showcased in the past, but this was our BIGGEST presence yet, and it was pretty surreal!

We hope you enjoy this little recap! 🙂

Setup

Our first priority was to bring snacks, which we brought in excess. However, looking at the booth, we felt that it needed more of that spicy, yummy, scrummy Snoozy flavor. So, we decided to stay up that night and create new art to print overnight at Staples the next day. In typical Snoozy fashion, we stayed up until 2am, used Comic Sans on our posters, and Yukon got so tired that he kept saying “Among Us, Among Us, Among Us” for the last hour, while I finished drawing a 6ft tall Turnip Boy. It was all worth it though, because we were able to bring back “make your own turnips” and visitors got to see how they compared to a 6ft tall Turnip Boy replica.

Also, this was the first year we got Pinny Arcade Pins! It wasn’t too hard to create because I used the Turnip Boy Robs a Bank logo to make it, but it was still a cool challenge making the art usable as a pin!

Turnip takeover!!!

For years, we have had a tradition of letting people create their own turnips to display on our turnip wall! It’s always been a lot of fun seeing what people come up with, and it’s really sweet to talk and engage with fans while they doodle. This year, the turnip wall was filled quite nicely, and there were some gems that were made. Some of the turnips capture the true spirit of Turnip Boy, while others will haunt our nightmares… All turnips are welcome on the turnip wall.

Meeting folks

For most of us at PAX, the highlight is always meeting fans of our games in person! It reminds us of why we do what we do! It was great to hear from people who had played Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion, as well as to get their reactions to Turnip Boy Robs a Bank! We received a lot of great feedback, and we’re excited to continue iterating on the game. We also got to chat with many cool indie developers and exhibitors! You could tell everyone was excited to be back in-person.

The raffle

We ended up raffling away our PC set ups at PAX this year. It would have been pricey to ship it all back. When the time of the raffle came up, we were genuinely shocked to see that we had filled our allotted space for the raffle! We were glad that we were able to give some tech to the gamers. We want to thank the enforcers for all their help organizing the raffle, because without them it would have been a shitshow.

Chef Boyardee

At PAX East 2020, our former marketing expert Jordan Kegler started a glorious tradition: eating cold Chef Boyardee on the show floor. This was more of a necessity that year, as we had bought so much Chef Boyardee and the hotel didn’t have a microwave. However, our palates now yearn for the taste of cold (technically lukewarm) Chef Boyardee, so we decided to feast on the show floor. Only Yukon and I participated, as the rest of the team thought it was disgusting. Heathens.

Wrapping up

We laughed, we cried, and we cracked open a cold Chef Boyardee with the boys, girls, and theys. Per usual, going to PAX was an absolute blast! We had a lot of fun meeting the team (most of us are work from home), all the gamers, and showcasing our silly little turnip game! We wanted to throw out a massive thank you to the entire Snoozy Kazoo team for all their amazing work, as well as Graffiti Games (Shoutouts to Andy & Michael!) for having us at their booth and being an important part in making this go smoothly. We can’t wait to hopefully do it again sometime soon! :)

It’s no surprise for our fanbase that we consider our first game, Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion, done. We’ve gone on-record to mention this in our Official Discord server (you should join if you haven’t already, there’s a ton of really nice people in there!), and we’ve even announced the official sequel, Turnip Boy Robs a Bank! While we’re really excited about what’s next for Snoozy Kazoo, we wanted to take a look back and tell the story of the development of Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion! We hope that this write-up is helpful, or at least an interesting read for aspiring indie developers to industry vets alike!

A shelved prototype…

Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion started out as a jam game built for Ludum Dare 41. The game was planned to be about a turnip in a post-apocalyptic world who’s looking for fertilizer. If this sounds familiar, it’s because the final version of the game, at least the first chapter of it, is pretty much identical. While this original version didn’t have tax evasion, it laid the roots for Turnip Boy as a game and as a character.

This being said, I quickly ran out of time during Ludum Dare, and the game was shelved for another project I was working on.

A few months later, I started having serious doubts about my current project’s scope and design. I had a few discussions with some close friends about it, and I ultimately came to the decision that I would start up Turnip Boy again in the summer.

Turning a new leaf!

When summer came around, I was working on a contract with my best friend (and future co-developer) Jennifer Kindl, and we decided to have a work session at a cafe (before COVID, this was the summer of 2019!). After doing a bit of our contract work, we decided to hit up the local Friendly’s for some absolutely mediocre food, and we discussed what I could do with Turnip Boy. Around that time we decided that Turnip Boy needed an obstacle to keep him from just going to the greenhouse, and we needed a reason as to why. We brainstormed a few ideas, and one of us randomly threw out tax evasion as a joke. We originally laughed and brushed this off, but eventually we came back to it and started fleshing out the idea.

I eventually decided to roll with the tax evasion idea, and started working out the plot with Jen. I had developed many prototypes and game ideas before, and for this one, I decided to tackle it differently. From the start, I laid out several core pillars the game would be built around, and every decision was made after referencing these pillars. I started with three main pillars;

• The game should be short, both in development time and gameplay length.
• All content should be lighthearted and goofy in nature.
• We should respect the player at all times.

These pillars quickly became the driving factor behind every choice we made. From achievements, to auto-saving, to storytelling, everything we designed had these pillars in mind, and it helped us stick to the game we set out to make from the start.

Around this time, BostonFIG submissions started to open, and one of my friends was offering to split a booth with me if I wanted too. I decided to use this opportunity to motivate myself to get a small demo together. I ended up making a rough version of the barn, complete with a big worm as a boss fight (which got a few screams of terror at the expo) and the “seed” mechanic, which allowed Turnip Boy to pick up and plant seeds, which would grow into different things, such as a Soil Sword or a Boombloom.

I ended up completing the demo the night before, with another one of my friends, Jake Currier, who cranked out some music to seal the deal. A few of my friends volunteered to help me run the booth, and I quickly scrambled together some props to make it as cute as possible.

We were not ready for what was about to happen.

Everyone at the convention absolutely loved the game. There were points where people were lining up to play. This was an absolute eye-opener for me, especially since the game was in a VERY rough state. There was something here that people loved deeply, and it became clear that Turnip Boy was destined to become something bigger.

Building up the game and the team.

After BostonFIG, I decided to revamp a large portion of the demo based on feedback we got during the expo. It was also around that time that I decided to onboard both Jennifer Kindl and Jordan Kegler, as it was clear that I needed help, and they were both really excited about the dumb game we’ve been talking about for months. This was one of the best decisions I’ve made surrounding the game, as they both brought a ton of amazing ideas to the project. It was around this time that we revamped the seed mechanic to be the plant mechanic that’s in-game today, as well as a complete revamp of the dialogue system (Jen pushed for this one HARD), so we could really flesh out the characters in Veggieville and build on the humor that was starting to surface around the project. We also added the tax document system, due to a few complaints we got where people wanted to “feel like they were actually committing tax evasion”, which was a REALLY hard thing to solve, especially with our lack of knowledge on how taxes actually worked.

We also started working more with Jake Currier and Ryan Borbone to fill the game with sick beats! Both of them gave us a ton of ideas throughout development to strengthen the story and theming we were going for, and Jake even wrote a song about it, which is what became A Fertile Wood at Heart!

Around this time, we also decided to bring Turnip Boy to the MassDigi Game Challenge. Game Challenge is a competition that revolves around business planning and pitching, and we wanted to see where we line up from a panel of industry vets, as well as hopefully win and be able to showcase the game at the upcoming PAX East expo!

We had prepared for this event months in advance, as this was actually our third time trying to take home the gold. We had a refined pitchdeck, a solid build, and a somewhat nice booth design. This was by far our strongest attempt at winning, and it paid off! We ended up taking home the trophies for the College Group Category, People’s Choice, and Best in Show!

This win was an amazing opportunity for us, as it allowed us to showcase the game at the MassDigi booth at PAX East! We ended up taking some time to continue to polish up our build, and then we turned our focus on PAX.

Pitching to pubs!

When planning for PAX, we wanted to spend a good amount of time talking to publishers and just seeing what they could offer us. After getting there and setting up our booth, we hit the showfloor, talking to every publisher we could.

It was around this time that Graffiti Games ended up jumping us, asking us about the game and our plans with it. They seemed super interested in the project, which was super exciting as a small student team.

After PAX, we sat down and talked to a TON of publishers. After a lot of meetings, we decided to go with Graffiti Games, as their energy was unmatched, and they were offering us everything we were asking for to finish the game.

This proved to be one of the best decisions we’ve made as a team, as throughout development, the team at Graffiti was always readily available to give us advice, milestone advances, as well as everything they promised on time and with grace. I don’t believe Turnip Boy would be where it is without them.

Grinding out the game…

After signing with Graffiti Games, we ended up starting our own company, which you can probably guess, especially if you’re reading this on our website. Snoozy Kazoo became our own little game studio, and we had to speedrun learning how to operate a small business. With the help of our lawyers (I literally must have asked hundreds of questions during this phase) and our accountant, as well as a ton of advice from mentors, we were able to get Snoozy Kazoo operating and the team moving forwards.

At this point, all was left for us was to finish the game. We spent about a year working till release, in-which we finished the game’s core content, polished up everything, worked with a QA & a localization team to improve and translate the game, as well as Graffiti’s porting engineer to get everything ready for our launch on Steam and the Nintendo Switch.

Time to launch this thing!

Launch was… completely insane. We always had a hunch that Turnip Boy would do alright, but we were floored by the insane amounts of hype and love thrown our way.

I think the wildest thing for us was seeing the game pop off a little on Twitch. I don’t watch a ton of live streams, but seeing stuff like this on Twitch’s front page was absolutely bonkers and even looking at this now it’s weird.

This was also insanely weird considering I’ve played an absolutely insane amount of both Sea of Thieves and Destiny 2, so seeing our dumb turnip game sitting next to them was a lot to process.

I’m not going to talk a ton about numbers here, but I would be lying if I was to say Turnip Boy’s launch wasn’t a financial success. Feel free to snoop and dig up info on SteamSpy or SteamDB if you’re really curious, but on our end, Turnip Boy has secured our near future as a game studio.

This being said, I would be a fool to say that we didn’t get INCREDIBLY LUCKY. I don’t want the take-away of this post to be “make a dumb meme game and you’re set”, as so many things had to line up for us to even get to the point of launch (COVID alone could have killed the game if it hit a month earlier and cancelled PAX East). Even during launch, we got really lucky that the popular Twitch Steamer/YouTuber RTGame found and decided to play our game, which was a massive boost for us both popularity and sales-wise. While we obviously tried to do as much as we could to help boost our launch, including some semi-popular TikToks, as well as all of Graffiti’s marketing efforts, we owe our community a lot of our success, as they were the ones to share and spread the game like crazy.

Lessons learned!

During the development of Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion, we learned a lot. We have a few key takeaways that we would like to share with the hopes of teaching other developers.

Firstly, we learned not to become too attached to our game. While everyone at Snoozy Kazoo cares deeply about our work and the game we created, we wanted to keep our emotional investment as low as possible. This was important because it allowed us to take an objective look at the game and make major decisions without being too entrenched in our own ideas and beliefs. Turnip Boy was never intended to be a multi-year project, and we would have scrapped it if it didn’t resonate with people. Our goal was to create a fun game, not a perfect one. By not getting too attached, we were able to let go of perfectionism, which resulted in a more loose and chaotic development process. We believe this gave the game a more authentic vibe as we captured the silliness of the world in our development environment.

Secondly, while we feel that a majority of the humor in Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion is situational and will make sense to players in the future, we didn’t really care if we included references or sayings from our current day and age. Although it’s nice for something to be timeless, we decided to put that aside to build a deeper connection with our audience in the present day. We believe that making this shift allowed Turnip Boy’s writing to feel more authentic once again. All of us at Snoozy Kazoo view Turnip Boy as a time capsule that encapsulates what we felt and thought throughout development. The game even reflects our journey as we developed it, with its humorous take on taxes reflecting our own lack of knowledge as dumb college kids who eventually learned how to run a business. We’ll always be able to look back and reminisce on how we felt during development because of it.

Overall, we’re really proud of the game we created and the community we fostered. We’re excited to bring you Turnip Boy Robs a Bank, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds!

Today we’re launching v1.1.3 of Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion!

We’ve partnered with Meteorbyte Studios to patch and improve each of our console ports, including an almost complete rewrite of the Xbox port!

I want to take a second to say we deeply apologize for the state the game launched on Xbox. When we launched the Xbox version, we believed our port to be solid, but soon discovered there was a problem that wasn’t found in testing or cert. Achievements are very important to us (I’m personally an achievement hunting completionist, so trust me when I say that broken achievements aren’t something I enjoy when playing games, and sure isn’t something we would ever feel comfortable with within one of our games), and we’re sorry about the delays in getting the Xbox port fixed so y’all could snag those last achievements. We’re working with Graffiti Games to iron out a solid Xbox porting process for our future games, and the goal is for our ports to never launch in a similar state ever again.

This patch aims at improving both performance and stability on all platforms. Also, for platforms that never got v1.1.2, this update includes that update as well!

We hope this update will resolve the majority of the issues our players have been experiencing, and we hope your turnip experience is fun as heck!

• Introduced limited-time Daily Challenge Contests! You’ll also be able to see if a Daily Challenge Contest is active by looking at the leaderboards in Sunset Station (Steam only, internet connection required)!
• Added Japanese localization.
• Added an option to turn off movement camera panning.
• Holding F12 on the main menu of the game will reset your keybinds. This action cannot be rebound, which will allow people who mess up their keybinds to restore them to default.

• Riot shield now blocks poison.
• Add deadzones on both the right and left sticks on controllers. (This should help combat slight Joycon drift for everyone playing on the Nintendo Switch!)
• Slightly moved Tots over to the left to prevent soft-locking.

I’m going to be real, this is a surreal experience for me. Turnip Boy was never supposed to be more than a dumb meme game I was just going to spend a few months on before dumping it online as a portfolio piece. The fact that we’re here today, and I can walk into a GameStop and purchase my own game is absolutely insane, and I’m extremely grateful to each and everyone of you who’s supported us along the way.

• Decreased the rate which sheep shoot out wool by half a second.
• Increased the Explosive Keg's chance of causing an enemy explosion from 20% to 45%.

This is an absolutely massive update that took several months for us to develop! We’ve added an infinite train dungeon to the game known as the Limitless Line!

The Limitless Line is not just another dungeon, as it has its own type of items called Trinkets, which are obtained during runs and define a meta of their own! Not only that, we’ve added a ton of rewards for doing well in the dungeon, the chance for familiar characters you know and love to appear on the train, and an absolute ton more!

• Fixed a bug where the shaking audio the wardrobe makes in the Bomb Bunker wouldn't stop playing when Turnip Boy leaves the room.
• Fixed a bug that would prevent Movemelons from properly allowing Turnip Boy to push them if they were grown before Turnip Boy got the Move Mittens.
• Fixed the softlock players were encountering in the southern area of the Forgotten Forest.
• Fixed an issue where Liz's scream audio would play multiple times at once.
• Fixed a typo on the directions sign in the Plain Plains.
• Fixed the it's used in the Rotten Cat Apple's boss description.
• Fixed an issue where touching an enemy even while in the hit-stunned state would shake the screen instead of just being on hit.
• Slightly moved the sign in the northern Forgotten Forest to cover less of the puzzle.
• Fixed a bug with time stopping not being registered when paused, which broke the on screen button prompts.
• Improved the look of the document popup when it first appears.
• The game will now properly deal with tampered save files. (WARNING: do not manually edit your save file, as now the game will delete it to prevent several crashes.)
• Humans will now no longer appear in the Bomb Bunker if they already have attempted to flee, regardless of if the player leaves the area before they fully flee.

Hey there tax evaders!

Thank you all so much for the amazing response we’ve had at launch! It means a ton to us that you guys are enjoying our little silly turnip game!

We wanted to make a post here to update everyone on our plans going forwards, as we have a ton of content that we’re working on that we’re really excited about!

v1.0.1 Patch

First off, throughout our launch we’ve been keeping an eye on the game, and logging any bugs, softlocks, and all the wonderful feedback we’ve received from the community! We will be releasing a patch in the near future that will address the most common issues, as well as add some extra features and polish to make the game play even better!

v1.1.0 Content Update

This is the real reason y’all are probably here! We’re planning on releasing a FREE large content update within the next few months. This update is still heavily in development, but the overall plan for it is to introduce a replayable dungeon that works more like a roguelite than a traditional dungeon! This dungeon will feature its own separate story, and be full of unique items that will form a meta within itself.

While nothing in this update is fully finalized yet, we have a ton of concepts and ideas that we’re really excited about, and we plan on sharing more about it in the near future! We’re hoping that it will scratch the itch for more Turnip Boy, and will become something the community enjoys for years to come!
